When do I need a building permit?
Building permits are required for replacement of windows and exterior doors (storm doors and storm windows are exempt). Permits are also required for roofing, siding, decks, and detached accessory buildings over 120 square feet in size. Permits are not required for sidewalks, driveways, concrete slabs, roof gutters, floor coverings, counter tops, cabinets, painting, nor similar finish work. Permits are not required for playground equipment, whether store bought or homemade. (Ref. MN Building Code Sec. 1300.0120 Subp. 4 (1), (8), (14).
Mechanical permits are required for replacement of existing or installation of new mechanical equipment. Replacement of parts or repair and servicing of mechanical equipment does not require a permit.
Plumbing permits are required for the installation or replacement of existing plumbing fixtures. Repair and replacement of parts does not require a permit.
