As some of you may know, we have had an uptick in mail theft in the area.  It is not always easy for officers to catch mail thieves in the act.  The West St. Paul Police Department needs observant neighbors, like you, to be out in full force to help us catch mail thieves.  Due Covid19, income tax filing deadline has been extended until July 15, 2020 and stimulus checks will continue to come in the mail.  It is more important than ever to stay on top of your mail.  Here are some tips to help keep mail thieves away:

1.    Pick up your mail regularly. Do not leave letters in the mailbox for several days, over the weekend or even overnight, if possible. Make checking your mailbox part of your daily routine
2.    Go green. Switch to paperless billing
3.     Do not flag your mailbox as a target.  Using the red flag on your mailbox can alert thieves that there is something in your mailbox to be stolen. Hand your mail directly to a letter carrier, or drop off your mail at the local post office.
4.    Keep your mailbox in good repair and make sure its properly installed
5.    Don’t send cash
6.    Consider getting a locking mailbox. Ask your local postmaster for the most up to date regulations on mail boxes
7.    Talk to your neighbors.  If your mail was stolen, let your neighbors know.  They may not realize their mail was stolen too. Watching out for your neighbors helps to build relationships and keep your neighborhood safe.  Look at starting a Neighborhood Watch group
8.    See Something, Say Something, Call 911
