Sunfish Lake eNews

Greetings Neighbors,

The SFL City Council and I wish to express our gratitude to the numerous residents who immediately engaged in assisting the community by contacting our State representatives in protest of this Bill. You can make a difference and it matters!

Understanding the critical nature of this Bill, the Council connected with a well-respected lobbyist whom I have known for 30 years. Coincidentally, this lobbyist was also recommended by a Sunfish Lake resident.

Yesterday, Representative Mary Frances Clardy, who has been advocating against this bill for all the local communities, scheduled a virtual meeting with officials from Mendota Heights, Inver Grove Heights, West St. Paul, Lilydale, and Sunfish Lake and with co-authors of the bill, Representatives Larry Kraft and Michael Howard. We each were able to present our viewpoints in this meeting. We followed up that meeting with the attached letter to the representatives citing the reasons that Sunfish Lake should be exempted from this Bill.

Our lobbyist, Joel Carlson, arranged a personal meeting with me today and with Representative Michael Howard and Representative Mary Frances Clardy. As many of you know one-on-one meetings with legislators are the most effective means of advocating for our position. Representative Michael Howard was quite gracious and indicated he understood our issues from the meeting yesterday. He stated in the presence of Joel Carlson and Representative Mary Frances Clardy; “Dan, I guarantee you that the final bill will have language that exempts Sunfish Lake.” We shook hands on that declaration, and I thanked him on behalf of all Sunfish Lake residents.

While it is not yet in writing and being a somewhat skeptical lawyer, I asked Joel Carlson as to the likelihood of this being accomplished. Joel assured me “100%” that we could trust in Representative Howard’s word.

I am pleased to report that due to the swift and focused collaboration of all engaged parties we were able to obtain this positive result for SFL. However, we will remain vigilant on the actual language that gets into the final bill and Joel Carlson will continue to monitor the situation.

Once again, I thank all who responded to this important issue. We are a small but mighty community!

Warmest regards,

Mayor Dan O’Leary
