Many residents have expressed concern over the homeless tents erected at the bottom of Salem Church Rd. and Robert Street. Our police Chief, Brian Sturgeon, has taken all possible action on the City’s behalf. His officers have spoken to the people in the tents and encouraged them to leave. The tents are on the State right-of-way for Robert Street, and thus SFL does not have jurisdiction over that specific area.  The Chief has contacted the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN DOT), which has authority over that area. There is a lengthy process that MN DOT executes before determining to physically evict homeless people.

Knowing this, the Chief has also focused his attention on contacting Ally Supportive Services, an organization contracted by Dakota County which provides homeless services and outreach efforts. They will be visiting the location in order to request that the homeless  move, and offer services and alternative housing.

Several residents have indicated they are fearful of their safety and the safety of their families. I want to assure all residents that there have been no violent or aggressive actions taken by any of these homeless individuals. We urge all residents to contact the police immediately if any such incidents arise. Rest assured; our Police Department will take immediate action for any such incidents.

We will utilize all legal means to resolve this matter, however, there is no quick solution unless the homeless individuals agree to accept the services of Ally Supportive Services.

A resident has requested a letter be sent to all residents as not everyone has signed up for email communication. We urge everyone to sign up for email communication. We ask you to notify all of your neighbors of this email communication and encourage those who have not signed up for such communication to sign up on the City website. This is a secure email site and we do not provide the email list to any other organization.
